Increased Metabolic Rate of Hauled-Out Harbor Seals (<i>Phoca vitulina</i>) during the Molt

نویسندگان

چکیده

Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) live in cold temperate or polar seas and molt annually, renewing their fur over a period of approximately 4 wk. Epidermal processes at this time require warm skin; therefore, to avoid an excessive energy cost sea during the molt, harbor many other pinnipeds increase proportion they are hauled out on land. We predicted that metabolic rate haul-out would be greater sustain elevated skin temperature order optimize hair growth. To examine this, we measured post-haul-out oxygen consumption (V˙O2) captive postmolt periods. recorded V˙O2 while were molting than when was complete. Post-haul-out increased faster reached maximum first 40 min. Thereafter, decreased but still remained greater, suggesting relatively high throughout haul-outs, it most pronounced Air temperature, estimated heat increment feeding, mass also explained 15.5% variation 180 min after haul-out, environment, feeding state, body size influenced individual animals. These results show have rates out, especially early stages period. As consequence, human disturbance changes behavior will costs potentially extend duration molt.

Stability in The Proportion of Harbor Seals Hauled Out Under Locally Ideal Conditions

We monitored the haul-out behavior of 68 radio-tagged harbor seals (Pbucu vittllina) during the molt season at two Alaskan haul-out sites (Grand Island, August-September 1994; Nanvak Bay, August-September 2000). For each site, we created a statistical model of the proportion of seals hauled out as a function of date, time of day, tide, and weather covariates. Using these models, we identified t...

Thermal windows on the trunk of hauled-out seals: hot spots for thermoregulatory evaporation?

Seals have adapted to the high heat transfer coefficient in the aquatic environment by effective thermal insulation of the body core. While swimming and diving, excess metabolic heat is supposed to be dissipated mainly over the sparsely insulated body appendages, whereas the location of main heat sinks in hauled-out seals remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate thermal windows on the trunk of har...

assessing metabolic syndrome through increased heart rate during exercise

the present study aimed to assess changes in resting and maximum heart rates as primary indicators of cardiac autonomic function in metabolic syndrome (mets) patients and to determine their value for discriminating mets from non-mets. 468 participants were enrolled in this cross-sectional study and assessed according to the updated adult treatment panel iii (atp-iii) definition of mets. resting...

Metabolic indicators in the skeletal muscles of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina).

The goal of this study was to determine the distribution of citrate synthase (CS), beta-hydroxyacyl coenzyme A dehydrogenase (HOAD), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities and myoglobin (Mb) concentration in the locomotor muscles (epaxial muscles) and heart of harbor seals. The entire epaxial musculature, which produces most of the power for submerged swimming, was removed and weighed, and ...

Spatial modeling of haul-out site use by harbor seals in Cook Inlet, Alaska

Harbor seals Phoca vitulina haul out on land to give birth to and rear their pups, rest, escape aquatic predation and molt. The choice of a haul-out site is therefore fundamental to survival and reproduction. Aerial surveys of harbor seals were conducted in Cook Inlet, Alaska, to investigate the seals’ selection of various environmental characteristics of haul-out sites. Eight surveys from Apri...
